The American School of Asuncion (ASA) is a private, non-profit, coeducational day school founded in 1953 offering a U.S.-style curriculum from pre-kindergarten to grade 12 to students of all nationalities. The school year comprises two semesters starting from mid-August to mid-December and from mid-February to late June of the following year.
The school is organized into an elementary school from K4 to grade 5 and a secondary school for grade 6 to 12, each with its own principal and counseling department. The School is run by a director general and governed by a 9-member Board of Directors elected at an annual general meeting by the parents and guardians of ASA students. An additional member who represents the U.S. Ambassador from the American Embassy acts as an additional member. ASA operates as a legal entity recognized under Paraguay law.
ASA's standards-based curriculum follows a college preparatory format. Emphasis is given to cooperative learning, critical thinking, problem solving and whole language, as well as to bilingualism and cultural diversity. All students in grades 1 to 12 are required to study Spanish. Each grade is limited to 46 students and is divided into 2 sections to maximize learning. ASA's standardized testing program consists of admission testing for all incoming transfer students, the IOWA Test of Basic Skills (ITBS), the PSAT, the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, SAT, and Advanced Placement exams.
The school faculty consist of approximately 70 faculty members, both full-time and part-time teachers from the U.S. and locally. There are also two principals overseeing the elementary and secondary levels respectively, a technology coordinator, a curriculum coordinator, an athletic director, a Paraguayan program coordinator, a librarian and 3 counselors each for the elementary, middle school and high school departments.
ASA is located on a 8.5 acre site in a residential suburb. The campus consists of separate elementary, middle and high schools, a full-size soccer field, a covered gymnasium, several outdoor athletic areas, 3 fully equipped computer labs for each school division, an outdoor elementary covered basketball court, an elementary playground, and a centrally monitored fire protection/fire detection system. All classrooms are fully air-conditioned. There are also well equipped art rooms, science labs, a multipurpose room, and a modern cafeteria which offers a hot lunch and snacks.
