The Georgetown International Academy is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program compatible with the United States system for nursery through grade 12. The School has been in operation since 1971. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending approximately from the beginning of September to the end of January and from the end of January to the middle of June. The School is governed by a School Board of 6 members, elected by parents of the students for a 2-year term. The School is not incorporated and operates with the unwritten permission of the government of Guyana. The curriculum is largely that offered by U.S. elementary, middle and high schools, with additions intended to assist pupils in understanding Guyana and Caribbean geography and history. Textbooks are current and are from major U.S. educational publishers. The School is housed in 2 recently extended and fully renovated buildings with classrooms, a science lab, a computer lab, a school library, an art lab, ESL, music, physical education and an assembly and conference room. There are also 2 play areas.
