
The American School of Quito opened its doors on October 14, 1940 to 162 students, offering a non-sectarian education based on the teaching of democratic values. The school’s founders were Galo Plaza Laso and Boaz Long, the representative of the United States Government in Ecuador at that time.
The American School of Quito has more than 2,200 students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12. Among these students are the children and grandchildren of the school's founding families. Currently the school is co-educational, non-religious and is a non-profit foundation. It is accredited by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and the Ecuadorian Ministry of Education and Culture. It is also an IB World School and offers both the Middle Years Programme and the IB Diploma Programme. Graduates of ASQ can obtain three diplomas: a high school diploma accredited in the United States, the Ecuadorian Bachillerato Unico and the I.B. Diploma.
The school sits in more than 100,000 square meter property with modern facilities including 162 classrooms and 11 special classrooms, 8 science labs, 5 music rooms, 1 drama classroom, 6 art classrooms, 7 computer laboratories, 2 kitchens, an auditorium that sits 200 people, an audiovisual room with 30-seating capacity and a small projection room. A 1,500-seat capacity stadium houses a soccer playing field, a regular track, weight room and a gym, four storage rooms and two dressing rooms. A multi purpose building houses two basketball and volleyball courts, a gym, coordination offices, storage room with bathrooms and dressing rooms and a 123-m stage.
