The International School of Ulaanbaatar is a private, coeducational day school, which offers an educational programme from Preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. Permission to run the School was granted by the Mongolian Ministry of Education in May 1992. The school year is divided into 2 semesters that run from August to June.
The School is governed by a multi-national board which consists of individuals from the European Union, the United States, and Mongolia, including representatives of parents and embassies. The programme of study used is based upon the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) curriculum. The teaching methodology stresses inquiry and activity-based learning based on best practice within the IBO philosophy, and the children are encouraged to enjoy and participate in the investigation of all areas of study. The School offers a full range of subjects, including English, mathematics, science and other languages (Mongolian A, Korean A, Chinese B, and French B), history, music, technology, visual arts, drama, and physical education.
Phase 1 and 2 of the new purpose built campus for ISU was completed in August 2007. It includes primary and secondary classrooms, two Science labs (Chemistry and Biology) with a preparation room, two IT labs (primary and secondary), gym/assembly hall with changerooms, a black box theatre classroom with props/costume storage, Visual Arts room, library, specialist ESL classrooms, Resource room for information about further education, soccer pitch and outside playing areas, cafeteria and kitchen, Clinis/Sick Bay, and administration offices. Plans are underway to build a purpose built Design Technology wing (workshop, storage and CAD studio), language classrooms and a Music classroom with practice rooms and storage. Future plans include an indoor pool, and more classrooms to cater for a proposed expansion to 600 students.
