The Inter-American Academy is a private, nonprofit, coeducational day school which offers a U.S. educational program from nursery through grade 12. The School was founded in April 1979 to serve the international community of Guayaquil. The school year comprises two semesters extending from early August to mid-December and from early January to late May or early June.
The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors elected from the Inter-American Cultural Association which is composed of parents or guardians of students attending the school.
The curriculum is that of a standard U.S. elementary and high school. Instruction is in English. Spanish is required of every student and is taught as a foreign language; however, fluency in the language is sought. Special English-as-a-Second Language classes are offered to those students whose level of proficiency is low. Art and music are offered as part of the curriculum. The School is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
The School is located on a beautiful campus in the Puerto Azul section. The 9 buildings house a cafeteria, 31 classrooms including science and computer laboratories, a library, locker rooms, and a fitness center. The contemporary facility has ample outdoor recreational space including 2 soccer fields, a covered multi-purpose area and playground, a basketball/volleyball court, a swimming pool, a tennis court, and a track and field area.
