The International School of Zug was founded in 1961 to provide a comprehensive education for English-speaking children in and around the towns of Luzern, Zürich and Zug. As the business population of the area has grown and diversified, the school has expanded and now provides education for over thirty nationalities of which approximately sixty percent are from Britain and North America.
In 1997 the school moved to a new purpose-built facility set in its own grounds on the outskirts of Baar. The school buildings consist of over forty classrooms, two libraries, two gymnasiums, a fully-equipped canteen and dining room, extensive grounds and sports facilities.
The curriculum is inquiry based and is that of the International Baccalaureate Primary and Middle Years Programmes. A comprehensive range of subjects is taught and additional specialist teachers are available for German, French, Dutch, ESL, drama, music and physical education. All classes, from Kindergarten and above, participate in the swimming programme and skating is organized during the winter months. Field trips are undertaken throughout the year with a special field week in late September.
The teaching staff are all qualified and most are experienced in international education. A support services department provides additional help for those children who may be experiencing academic difficulties or who need physical therapy. The school is open five days per week from Monday to Friday from the end of August to the end of June. A wide range of after-school activities is offered, including Brownies and Boy Scouts. An active Parents' Association creates a social calendar each year for parents and students. An Advisory Council meets regularly to discuss the development and promotion of the school.
The school is registered with the Zug Cantonal education department as a private school. It is inspected regularly and aims to provide a well-balanced, stimulating educational environment for students of all nationalities.
