
The International School of Berne is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from pre-kindergarten (age 3) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1961. The school year has 3 trimesters which starts in August and ends in June.
The School is governed by a Board of Directors, composed of 9 members elected by the PTA which confers automatic membership to parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. The curriculum follows the International Baccalaureate Program with full instructions in English. The IB Primary Years Program and Middle Years Program currently being introduced. Grades 11 and 12 students study for the IB Diploma. The School's testing program includes the International Schools Achievement Tests in grades 3/5/7 and 9, the PSAT, and SAT. German and French are offered as foreign languages in grades K-12 but English-as-an-additional-Language is available for students whose first language is not English. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and the Council of International Schools.
The main school facilities including the secondary school are located on a 1.5 acre site with the ELC being 200 meters from the main site and the elementary school across the road. The central facility has five modern, well-equipped buildings, two libraries, a gymnasium, two art rooms, science laboratories, classrooms, a learning resource center, a well-organized playground and a sports field.
