Kungsholmen's Gymnasium is located in the centre of Stockholm. It is a Swedish state school. The present school building has been re-built and enlarged and re-opened in 1995. All teaching in the International Section is in English. Three programmes are offered. One is a three-year course of studies leading to the International Baccalaureate examinations. The first year is an introductory year and teaching is given in a wide range of subjects. In the second and third years, pupils choose subjects according to the requirements of the IB examinations. The other two courses of studies are a three-year Social Sciences programme and a three-year Natural Sciences programme. These two courses of study follow the official curriculum and syllabus taught in Swedish upper secondary schools and successful completion of either course gives a student general university entry qualifications. Teachers are native language speakers or have experience of teaching abroad. Languages are taught by Swedish teachers. Students come from all over the world and are of many nationalities. A large number are Swedes who have spent some years outside Sweden. The student body changes from year to year, as parents are posted abroad or arrive in Stockholm. Most students who graduate enter university in their home countries. The school year is divided into two terms and runs from mid-August to mid-June. Admission is based on previous school records, an entry examination, and if necessary, an interview. Dependents of diplomats or contract employees are given priority to the IB programme.
