The British School of Barcelona is an independent, co-educational school, founded in 1958 as The Anglo-American School. The school offers a British education to children of all nationalities from the age of 3 to 18 years of age. lt is situated in a quiet, residential town on the coast some 20 kilometres to the south of Barcelona and is only 200 metres from an extensive sandy beach. Studies are based on the National Curriculum and complementary studies are offered in Spanish. The school runs a full GCSE and "A" Level programme and is an authorised examination centre for the University of Cambridge and the University of London Examination boards. Pupils have direct access to universities in Britain, USA, and to Spanish universities after the Spanish entrance examination, "Selectividad". Advice is given to pupils on their choice of subjects within the programme and also extensive help and advice is provided when choosing appropriate courses at university. An excellent pass rate in final examinations ensures entrance to university for the majority of the pupils, most of whom, in recent years, have chosen to study in Britain. The staff at the British School of Barcelona are fully qualified UK-trained while the staff in the Spanish department hold the qualifications required by the Spanish Ministry of Education. The school's new building complex opened in September 1999. This includes large classrooms, library, 3 laboratories, art room, two IT suites, Music and Audio-visual rooms, gymnasium and outdoor sports facilities. The new school also has extensive gardens and play areas and is surrounded by Sports and Tennis clubs. The Olympic Canal is only a few minutes walk away and is used for rowing and sailing. Extra-curricular activities are organised throughout the year and pupils take part in a Sports tournament with local Spanish schools. An annual ski trip is organised as are field trips, outings and cultural visits. Lunch and bus services are provided.
