The American School of Madrid (ASM) is a private, independent, not-for-profit co-educational day school for children in grades prekindergarten (age 3) through 12 (age 17/18). Founded in 1961, the school aims to provide students with an outstanding college-preparatory education. Today, ASM offers the U.S. high school curriculum, the International Baccalaureate diploma programme and the official Spanish program. The vast majority of the students are granted admission into the college of their choice, be it in the United States, Spain, or elsewhere in the world. Currently, the school enrolls approximately 800 students from over 50 countries. ASM is accredited by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, the Spanish Ministry of Education and the International Baccalaureate Organization. It is affiliated with the European Council of International Schools (ECIS), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) and the Mediterranean Association of International Schools (MAIS). The school is situated on its own 10-acre campus in Pozuelo de Alarcón, a suburban residential area just 12 km (7 mi.) outside of Madrid. ASM maintains a very low teacher-student ratio throughout the Pre-kinder to the 12th grade program. It has a rigorous curriculum requiring a minimum of 21.5 credits in acceptable high school courses in order to be eligible for an ASM diploma. The campus has its own purpose built installations including main building, annex, playground, parking, athletic fields and controlled entrance with modern and spacious sports facilities including an indoor gymnasium, grass soccer field, baseball diamond, tennis courts, cinder track, and weight room. It has the largest and most complete English-language library in Spain with 33,000 volumes and computerized research facilities. The school boasts of five large new modern computer laboratories with extensive instruction and hands-on opportunities and four university-quality science laboratories. The school employs and retains a number of highly qualified personnel, including administrators, teaching specialists and teachers, most of whom are trained and experienced in the American system of education.
