The American International School of Bucharest is an international, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from Early Childhood (3-4 year olds) through grade 12 for students of any nationality. The School was founded in 1962. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from late August through mid June.
The School is governed by a 10-member, self-perpetuating Board of Directors where the Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy serves as chairperson.
AIS Bucharest provides a U.S. and International curriculum in English, suited to meet the needs of the International student community. It offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in grades 6-10, and the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in grades K-5. The students are taught in art, drama, cinematography, physical education, music (band/choir), computers, Spanish and French by various specialists at various grade levels. The School currently does not provide assistance to students with major learning disabilities or to those who are physically challenged. AIS Bucharest is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the European Council of International Schools (CIS) and is fully authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programs.
The School's campus, which is located on a 10-hectare (25 acre) site north of the city center, includes spacious classrooms, a library/media center, a sports center/gymnasium for the secondary school and a gymnasium for the elementary school, music and art rooms, science and computer labs, performing arts theater, a cafeteria and many outdoor sports facilities including tennis, basketball and soccer.
