The Oslo International School (OIS) is a co-educational English-language day school enrolling students from ages 3 to 18 years. The School was established in 1963. Approximately 80 percent of its students are from international businesses and embassies in the Oslo area. The school year extends from late August to late June. OIS is an independent, not-for-profit, educational trust under Norwegian legal jurisdiction. It is administered by a director, while a Board of Trustees has responsibility for the financial status and strategic direction of the School. Board membership is by appointment; it is currently composed of representatives of 1 embassy, 4 businesses and 2 school employees. Several of the members are also parents at the school. The Primary School (ages 3-11 years) teaches mathematics, literacy, music and physical education as "stand alone" subjects; all other subjects are taught through the International Primary Curriculum. This is an integrated program of study that lays great emphasis on learning styles, the most recent research into how children learn and includes an international element in each unit of study. Specialist teachers are used for music, PE, ICT, Norwegian and drama. Differentiated teaching and learning outcomes are used to help children who require extra support or a greater challenge. An educational support teacher is available for students who are slightly below grade level in literacy and mathematics. The Secondary School is split into Lower Secondary (Year 7-10), and Upper Secondary (Pre-IB through IB – International Baccalaureate). The Lower Secondary School follows a comprehensive academic program with strong international elements. Core subjects include English, math, physical education, history, science, geography, art, French and Norwegian. Spanish and German are options in Years 9 and 10. Internal examinations are provided for all students as well as the opportunity to sit the International General Certificate or Secondary Education examinations. In 1989 the School was approved to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma program, which is an excellent preparation for university and college studies. A number of extra-curricular activities are offered after school hours. An active Parents’ Association provides a range of service and activities for the School as well. OIS is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Facilities are located in a suburb of Oslo, about 15 minutes drive from the centre of the city. There is adequate playground space on site and there are sports fields and a sports hall beside the school site. Specialist rooms include laboratories, 2 computer labs, a music and drama room, a library/media centre, art and DT rooms, a food science kitchen and a gymnasium. All teaching rooms are networked for Internet.
