The American International School of Rotterdam, is an independent, non-sectarian, non-profit, college-preparatory coeducational day school which offers a quality English language educational program for prekindergarten (age 3) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. Founded in 1959, the school year comprises two semesters extending from mid-August to mid-January and from mid-January to mid-June. The School is governed by a Board of Trustees, consisting of 8 to 11 members, appointed for 3-year terms and operating under the auspices of Stichting, The American International School of Rotterdam, the foundation which sponsors the School.
The curriculum is that of U.S. college preparatory public schools where instruction is in English. French (grades 3-12), Dutch (PK-12), and Spanish (grades 6-12) are taught as foreign languages. Computer, art, music, drama, physical education, library classes, and swimming are taught by specialists. An intensive English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) program is also offered. The high school offers a full International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program. The School is reaccredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and by the European Council of International Schools. It is a member of the Northwest European Council of International Schools for interscholastic sports and other activities.
The school is staffed by full-time and part-time faculty members with four administrators, a special education teacher, a guidance counselor, a business manager and a full time physician's associate.
In the spring of 1995, the School moved to a new purpose-built facility and has become a part of Rotterdam's International Education Center (IEC). The IEC is a shared facility with the Japanese School of Rotterdam (JSR and AISR). The Schools together have 45 instructional areas, 4 science laboratories, a computer center, a sports complex (including sports fields, a double gymnasium and a rented pool), a multi-media center, 3 art rooms, a classroom for domestic science, and a cafeteria. The School is totally computer networked and has two wireless mobile labs and a wireless network. A third floor extension was completed on the AISR side in March of 2003 with five new classrooms (two of which are science labs), two additional offices and a spacious student lounge.
