The American School of Milan is an independent, coeducational day school for students of all nationalities, which offers an educational program from nursery through grade 12 with postgraduate 13th year. The School was founded in 1962. The School year comprises two semesters which run from September 4 to January 27 and from January 30 to June 23.
The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Trustees, elected for 2-year terms by the Association of the American School of Milan, the sponsor of the School. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the School. The School is formally organized as a non-profit institution and has been designated as tax-exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Code.
The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory public schools and includes the International Baccalaureate program option. Multi-age classes for primary and intermediate students allow learners to make continuous progress in a collaborative, family-style environment. Students make use of wireless laptop computers from grade 6. The School is the testing center in Northern Italy for the Educational Testing Service. The testing program includes SAT 1 and 2, PSAT, and GRE. Instruction is in English. The academic program includes an extensive interscholastic program, drama, music, student government, and lifetime sports instruction. One hundred percent of the graduates go on to colleges and universities. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
Recently remodeled buildings consist of three main interconnected two-story buildings. There are four separate learning units: Primary (N-2), Intermediate (3-5), Middle School (6-8), and High School (9-12). The self contained campus has two modern computer laboratories, and a very well equipped Media Center, 43 classrooms, 5 science laboratories, a cafeteria, an auditorium, a double gymnasium, a dance studio, a weight room, a soccer field and three tennis courts.
