The Bilingual European School of Milan was initially established in 1999, as a natural continuation of the British American pre-school, with which it shares a building. In its first year, the school opened with just 12 elementary students and two staff. The student enrollment for the current school year stands at over 200 and the number of teaching staff, at over thirty. As the school has developed and grown, so has the curriculum. In 2005, the school became an International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) Primary Years Programme (PYP) candidate school. In 2006 the school received Paritas from the Italian government. Both of these achievements have allowed the school to move forward, bringing the Italian and the English section of the schools closer together and providing them with the structure to provide an inquiry driven, international, bilingual education to its students. All of the staff employed at BES are qualified teachers. There are over thirty staff currently employed at the school. Each class, from year 1 to Year 5, has a core Italian and a core English teacher. These teachers are responsible for the delivery of the majority of the curriculum in the elementary school. There are also specialists that teach within the subject disciplines of art, drama, music and IT at the elementary school. In the middle school a team of nine teachers deliver a broad and balanced curriculum to the year 6 class, in line with the expectations of an Italian 'scuola media', whilst maintaining the philosophy of the IBO and functioning within a bilingual structure. The school has a well equipped and updated computer room, library and gym. In addition to the regular classrooms, there are spacious and well resourced rooms dedicated to the instruction of music, drama and art. A garden and playground adjoin the school and according to a convention stipulated with the local church use is also made of the nearby church playground.
