St. Stephen's School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school which offers an educational program from grade 9 through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. A post-graduate year is also available. The School was founded in 1962 and opened in 1964. The school year comprises 2 semesters which generally extend from late August to mid-June. The School is governed by a Board of Trustees, which meets in both New York and Rome. The Trustees, who are based in Rome, function as an Executive Committee. The School is recognized under Italian law and is also incorporated in the State of Connecticut as a non-profit, tax-exempt institution. The curriculum is that of a U.S. college-preparatory independent school. The School offers Advanced Placement examinations and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The School's testing program includes the Admission Testing Program of the College Board and the International Baccalaureate examinations. Instruction is in English. French, Italian, and Latin are taught as foreign languages. Course offerings include English-as-a-Second-Language and literature, mathematics through calculus, human physiology, biology, chemistry, physics, computer studies, health, history of art, sculpture, economics, music appreciation, drama, art, dance, chorus, Roman topography, and history. There is no religious instruction. The School is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of International Schools. Situated in the archaeological center of Rome, the 2-acre site includes one building that contains 21 dormitory rooms; 6 resident faculty facilities; 12 classrooms; 2 art studios; 3 science laboratories; a library; a dining room; a kitchen; a laundry; a theater/assembly hall; a snack bar/lounge; a computer room; a dark room; tennis, basketball and volleyball courts; a courtyard; and a small gymnasium.
