The American International School of Budapest is an independent, coeducational nonprofit day school, which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1973. The school year comprises 2 semesters for middle and high schools extending from August 21 to January 19, and from January 22 to June 15. The elementary school has 3 trimesters from August 21 to November 17, November 20 to March 9 and March 12 to June 15. The school is governed by a Board composed of an Honorary Chair, 11 voting members, and 3 non-voting members. The curriculum is similar to that in U.S. private schools. In addition, the International Baccalaureate program is offered to students in grades 11 and 12. Instruction is in English. German, French, and Spanish are taught as world languages in grades 4-12. Music, art, computer, and physical education are offered at all grade levels. Hungarian culture studies are introduced through classwork, projects, field trips and/or speakers at all grade levels. A variety of extracurricular activities are available. English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) is provided to those students not fluent in English. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Council of International Schools. Faculty: In the 2006-2007school year, there are 87 full-time and 19 part-time faculty members. The School operates 4 divisions on 2 campuses. The Buda campus (PK-grade 2) facility has 24 classrooms, an indoor swimming pool, a gymnasium, a theater, an art room, a music room, 2 ESL rooms, a resource room, a nurse?s office, a library, a dining room, a computer lab, and 4 playgrounds. The facility for grades 3-12 opened in August 2000, and is located on a 25-acre plot of land in Nagykovacsi, a suburb of Budapest. The upper elementary, middle and high schools are housed in separate sections of the 16,600 square meter building, which is designed to accommodate more than 600 students. In addition to 51 classrooms, the facility includes a library, a cafeteria, 4 ESL rooms, 2 resource rooms, 4 computer labs, a double-sized gymnasium, a 25-meter indoor swimming pool, an auxiliary gymnasium, a 350-seat theater, a black box theater, 3 art rooms, 2 soccer fields, a rubberized track, a softball diamond, an outdoor basketball court, 4 tennis courts, 3 elementary playground areas, a weight training room, 3 music rooms, a drama room, and a health center.
