The International School Hamburg is a co-educational day school enrolling students from Primary 1 (age 3) to Grade 12. The school was founded in 1957 as the first international school in Germany.
The ISH school buildings in Holmbrook were originally constructed in 1973. They were renovated and extended in a major programme of improvement completed in 1999. A new wing was then built to accommodate the Early Childhood Centre, eight classes from Primary 1 to Grade 2, the Junior School Library and rooms for Music, German, ESL, Special Educational Needs and the School Counsellor. The building also has new offices for the school administration and a cafeteria.
The old buildings were at the same time refurbished and re-equipped with separate accommodation provided for each secondary curriculum area. Specialist teaching rooms include two large Visual Education studios with a ceramics area including a kiln and a dark room for photographic work, a Computer Laboratory, a Technology workshop, a shared IT room for Science and Mathematics, five Science Laboratories, a Library and Media Centre and a Gymnasium. There are also rooms for Music and Drama and a large Aula used for public performances and meetings.
At the same time the school acquired additional land at the back which paved the way for the construction of an outside all-weather sports facility and separate recreational areas for Junior and Secondary Schools. In 2002 six classrooms were built to accommodate the increased student numbers in the Junior School. Additional parking for visitors has also been provided plus two drop off zones for parents bringing their children to school by car.
