TASIS England, also known as "The American School in England," is the smallest and one of five American schools located in and around London. It was founded in 1976 in the village of Thorpe, Surrey, south west of London. The school is six miles from Heathrow Airport and 18 miles from central London. Its 35-acre campus provides facilities for both boarders and day students. The school consists of a Lower School (pre-kindergarten to 5th grade), a Middle School (6th-8th) and an Upper School (9th-12th grades). In total there are approximately 750 students and 100 full-time faculty. The Upper School has about 390 students, 160 of whom board. The Lower and Middle schools only teach the American curriculum. The Upper School, offers the International Baccalaureate together with the traditional American AP system, which it has offered since its founding. Facilities on the campus include the main classroom, administration and dormitory complex, four new classroom buildings, separate early childhood, lower, and middle school (N, Pre-K-8) units, several residence cottages, six science laboratories, a theatre, three libraries, two computer facilities, an art/music complex, gymnasium, fitness centre, tennis and basketball courts, and three playing fields. There is also a 400-seat theater which was opened in January 1993 and an Early Childhood wing which opened in 1996.
