The International School of Luxembourg is an independent, non-profit day school focused upon students from the local international community. Ability to profit from the school's academic program is the prime criterion for admission. Thirty-eight nationalities are represented, predominately from Europe (54%), North America (23%), and Asia (16%). The Board of Directors is composed of elected parents and leaders from the greater community. The Luxembourg government offers significant support by providing the school’s excellent facilities. In addition, the school has successfully developed a 'partnership' with local businesses that includes capital support. The International School of Luxembourg school year begins in early September and ends in late June. There are two divisions of similar size. The Lower School extends from pre-school (age 3) to 5th grade. The Upper School division includes both the middle (6th to 8th grades) and high school programs. The average faculty member has fifteen years of teaching experience, and has been on the staff for ten years. Teachers are recruited worldwide. International School of Luxembourg follows an English-based international curriculum, culminating with the International Baccalaureate. Additional instruction is offered for those with English as a second language. ISL provides French classes throughout the school, and German is offered from age 11. Supplementary programs are available in Japanese, Swedish, and Norwegian. Other school specialists include counsellors, librarians, and instructors in information technology, art, music, physical education, and learning support. The International School of Luxembourg occupies spacious and modern facilities within Luxembourg City. These include 53 networked classrooms, two libraries, a 400-seat auditorium, a cafeteria, four science laboratories, four computer rooms, a three-court gymnasium, and an artificial sports field. There is provision for students with physical disabilities. The school day extends from 08:30 to 15:30, followed by a variety of after-school activities, in particular sports. ISL endeavours to take advantage of Luxembourg's exceptional location with field trips to neighbouring countries. Families are responsible for transportation to and from school. International School of Luxembourg is accredited by the European Council of International Schools and by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
