The Chiang Mai International School (CMIS) provides a day school education from kindergarten through grade 12 for children of foreigners of all nationalities and of eligible host-country nationals. CMIS was founded in 1954 and is located in the northern city of Chiang Mai. The two-semester school year begins in mid-August and continues through June with extended vacations during late December and early April.
CMIS is approved by the Ministry of Education in Thailand that, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, appoints a 12-member Board of Directors composed of its representatives and representatives of the Foundation of the Church of Christ in Thailand. This Foundation appoints a 9-member Administrative Advisory Board. The School is run by a Thai director and a foreign principal.
The language of instruction is English. Classes are kept small, with an average class size of less than 20 students. Challenging Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in a range of subjects for talented high school students. CMIS is licensed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) since 1984. It is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) and the International Schools Association of Thailand (ISAT).
In the 2006-2007 school year, there are 57 full-time faculty members. Teachers are highly qualified and certified in their home countries.
The School’s centrally located campus combines features from its 52-year history with new facilities and resources. These include air-conditioned classrooms, laboratories for the sciences and computing, a library, a multipurpose auditorium, a cafeteria, two basketball courts, a sports field, and a new two-story gymnasium.
