The day and boarding students at the United World College of South East Asia (UWCSEA) come from 62 nationalities. UWCSEA is one of 10 United World College schools located throughout the world. The UWC movement promotes international understanding through education. In accordance with the ideals of the UWC movement, the experience of studying in a multi-national and multi-cultural school is also utilized to cultivate in students the value of tolerance and understanding of other ways of life. The governing body of the UWCSEA includes eminent figures within Singapore in the fields of finance, law and management. The board of governors consists mainly of parents while teachers and ex-students are also represented. All governors serve in an honorary capacity. Teachers are required to hold full teaching qualifications in addition to degrees in their main subjects. Experienced specialists are employed in all subject areas and have considerable experience in running extra-curricular activities. The majority of staff are British, with teachers of 23 other nationalities. UWCSEA is a modern, well-equipped school with air-conditioned classrooms and specialist facilities providing for a wide range of educational activities. There are five music and four drama studios with a main hall seating over 400 and a theatre hall seating over 200 and two large sports halls, fitness centre, two astroturf fields and floodlit tennis courts. Along with 56 new classrooms, a new boarding house and an Administration Block, the College has a modern, fully equipped Drama Theatre. There are specialist rooms for teaching home economics, design and technology and 3D art and a thirty-booth language laboratory. The College Library has over 20,000 volumes and a range of resources on CD-ROM. As far as possible the boarders are housed together with others of the same age in dormitories which have just been built for three or four occupants. Each house has full facilities for different age groups. Boarders have access to other facilities, such as the college library, swimming pool and sports hall, which are supervised for their use outside school hours.
