Founded in 1958 by missionaries as a centrally located boarding school outside of Seoul, TCIS (then called Taejon Foreign School) began as a primary school with eight students in three grades meeting in a U.S. Army Quonset hut. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, TCIS (then called Korea Christian Academy) was both an elementary and secondary school with close to one hundred students in twelve grades meeting in classrooms and more permanent structures. Today, TCIS is a fully accredited college preparatory international Christian school with approximately 500 students (Pre Kindergarten - 12th grade) taught in five new and remodeled buildings.
TCIS is governed by a board of trustees composed of members appointed by the founding U.S. church missions and two parents elected at-large from the community. The headmaster is the chief administrator and is directly responsible to the board for the operation of the school.
TCIS is located on a ten and one-half acre garden campus in the center of Daejeon, Korea. School facilities include a new five-storey high school building with twenty new classrooms, including four science lab/instructional areas, a guidance center, and a health and first aid center; all are equipped with excellent resources and provide ample space for interactive, collaborative learning. A new administrative building is attached to the high school building. The high school and administrative building features high-speed, wireless technology.
Additional facilities on the campus include an elementary building, an auditorium building with fine arts classrooms, an info-tech building with two libraries and two computer labs, a nursery and residence program office building, and a gymnasium. The middle school is located in a designated area of the campus and currently consists of temporary classrooms. Plans have been made for a new middle school building with construction to begin soon as part of the ongoing ten-year campus development plan. Three on-site dormitories, a residence program clinic, a laundry facility, and a cafeteria primarily serve our residence students. Three additional dormitories are located off campus within a five-minute walk of the school.
