St Mary's International School, founded in 1954 by the Brothers of Christian Instruction, is an all-boys school whose mission is to serve the international community of Tokyo. As such it enrolls students from over 65 nationalities and all religious backgrounds. The school follows a college preparatory curriculum with virtually all of its graduates attending university. The largest percentage complete their higher education in the United States or the United Kingdom but its graduates can be found all over the world.
St Mary's International School is taught in English, but students from grade one study Japanese language with the opportunity for first language level in the high school. The school has a special commitment to language study and currently offers fourteen different second languages. The International Baccalaureate is well established in the high school on both the Diploma and Certificate level.
St Mary's International School is located in Tokyo's largest residential area on a seven acre site in one of the city's rare green belts. The school is easily accessible from any part of the city by subway, train, public or school bus. The physical plant includes a 25-meter indoor pool, gymnasium, astro-turf playing field and tennis courts. Students in the elementary and middle school spend a week of study and skiing at the school lodge. Cultural trips within the country are part of the curriculum.
The school offers a wide variety of extra curricular activities on all levels. These include such team sports as cross country, tennis, wrestling, swimming, basketball, soccer, track and field, baseball, ice hockey, aikido and judo. Choir, instrumental music, brain bowl, speech, debate, math field day, student government and publications are all available to students.
Admission to St Mary's International School is granted to students who will benefit from this style of education. Records from previous schools should be submitted before admission and if necessary placement tests are given. Early applications are encouraged.
