Christian Academy in Japan (CAJ), established in 1950, is a private Christian school in the city of Higashi Kurume, Tokyo, Japan that provides an American-style education in English. An average of 450 students enroll from kindergarten through high school. About less than half of the students are children of Christian missionaries who work for some 40 different mission organizations. The students come from more than 25 countries, with a majority of whom are from the United States, Japan, and Korea. Most students commute, but a dormitory on the campus houses up to 16 middle-school or high-school students. The four-acre (16,000 m²) campus in the western suburbs of Tokyo also includes a classroom building, auditorium, library, gymnasium, computer lab, home economics and industrial arts facilities, and a dining hall.
CAJ has elementary, middle school and high school divisions. The program is communicated in the English language and is based upon an American approach which uses United States educational standards, course sequences and options (college preparatory and career), instructional materials, standardized tests, educational research, and cocurricular activities. The school also provides support to parents who homeschool their children and to those who enroll their children in Japanese schools through a program called Educational Support Services (ESS). CAJ has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges since 1976.
CAJ has a wide range of activities for its students. Chapel is included for all ages. Elementary school activities include several musical groups and various field trips. Middle and high school activities include the CAJ Student Council, sports, drama, music, field trips, yearbook, school newspaper, and community service opportunities.
