Kyoto International School is an independent, non-denominational, day school. KIS was founded in 1957. It is set up as a non-profit organization (NPO). The school achieved this status in March, 2005. KIS is governed by the Board of Directors and managed by the Principals. KIS serves as a community resource for internationally-minded families. Located in the heart of historic Kyoto, students are provided with opportunities and resources to become cross-cultural learners and responsible citizens. The school is a large four story building leased from the city of Kyoto. There are seven spacious classrooms, an art room, music room, computer lab and library. Sports facilities include a playing field, and gym. In fall, the school learns soft tennis and in spring students take swimming lessons at a private pool 10 minutes away. A broad and challenging curriculum has been developed with the aim to have students succeed at being; inquirers, thinkers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, well-balanced, and reflective. Kyoto International School is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). It is a member of the Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS) and the East Asian Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS). Currently, textbooks and curriculum materials come from the United States, England and various commonwealth countries. KIS is an IBO Primary Years Program (PYP) school. Students take the ACER standardized tests for math and language. The Pegasus Program (middle school) includes integrated study trips each year. Past trips have been to Mongolia, Okinawa & New Zealand.
