Canadian Academy's objective is a very high standard of college preparatory education. With nearly 750 students, K-12, the Canadian Academy is large enough to be stable financially and offer a varied curriculum and extracurricular activity program, and yet small enough that every student is known by name and individual attention is the rule. Opening in 1913, CA moved in 1990 to a fully equipped educational facility. The school has more than 500 advanced Macintosh computers, all networked to the Internet. The library contains nearly 40,000 volumes. Canadian Academy teachers have many years of experience in both their home country and other international schools prior to joining to the Canadian Academy. One-half have Masters degrees. The teaching staff is stable, with an average tenure exceeding six years. The elementary school program is designed to meet the needs of the 3 to 11 year-old learner. Class sizes are small. Parent volunteers provide assistance to teachers in many grades. Children learn to work effectively in groups and to become responsible, active learners. Students are expected to engage in classroom learning and to follow through with homework assignments. The middle school program is structured to address the unique needs of adolescents. The class schedule is a 'double block' or four classes per day in a two-day rotation. Teachers can move beyond lectures to independent study, research, group work, and conferencing with individual students. High school students achieve above average scores in several types of external examinations including the IB, AP, and SAT, and earn acceptances at the most selective universities in the world. CA graduates currently attend Brown, Cambridge, Duke, Georgetown, Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Rice, Stanford, The London School of Economics, Tufts, and Yale, among others. Service opportunities, fine arts (drama, strings, band, choir, studio art), and sports round out the students’ experience.
