The Jakarta International School is a co-educational private day school founded in 1951 with classes from Prep-Kindergarten to Grade 12. The US-based curriculum is international in scope, and offers a full IB programme. Examinations given include Interest Inventory, Aptitude Inventory, IB Diploma, AP, SAT, ACH, ACT, SSAT, PSAT and TOEFL. Many of the faculty are Americans and all teachers hold a Bachelor of Arts degree with many holding either a Master of Arts degree or either a PhD or Ed. A large part of the students come from the US, Canada and Southeast Asia while the rest come from Europe and other countries. More than 98% of JIS graduates go on to college or university, half of them in the United States. The academic year at Jakarta International School starts in the middle of August and ends in June, with a three-week Christmas break, a one-week first semester break in October, and a one-week second semester break in April. Extra-curricular activities include drama, gymnastics, dance, music, computers, yearbook, photography, excursions/expeditions, cultural exchanges, MUN and sports programs. JIS stretches over three beautiful, well-equipped campuses: Pattimura Elementary campus in the heart of the diplomatic residential area near Central Jakarta; and Pondok Indah Elementary and the adjacent Cilandak campus, home to the Middle and High Schools, located in South Jakarta. Each campus has air-conditioned classrooms, superb laboratories, libraries and theaters and all enjoy an exceptional array of sporting facilities that include swimming pools, gyms, covered tennis courts and all-weather track and sports fields. World-class facilities support the academic and co-curricular activities and provide the students appropriate venues for their best efforts and performances. Jakarta International School does not have the facilities to deal with children with serious learning disabilities or special education problems.
