The American School of Bombay (ASB) is an independent, coeducational day school. It was founded in 1981 and offers a U.S.–style educational program from prekindergarten (Early Childhood Education) through grade 12. At least one parent plus the student must hold a foreign passport. Offer of a place is subject to sufficient and satisfactory academic records and availability of space in the class. Indian students may be admitted only after meeting the strict admission criteria of the Government of India. The school year comprises 4 quarters extending from mid August to early June. The elementary school year is divided into trimesters, and the middle and high school year is divided into semesters.
The School is governed by a 9-member Board of Trustees, elected for 2-year terms by the School Association which is comprised of parents and guardians of registered ASB students. The U.S. Consul General serves as the Board Chairman and appoints two members of the Board of Trustees – the U.S. Government Representative and the Foreign Government Representative. The remaining 6 members are elected from the School Association.
ASB follows a U.S. general academic, college preparatory curriculum, similar to that of better U.S. public schools, and uses U.S. textbooks and instructional materials. The School is an authorized IB World School, recognized by the International Baccalaureate Organization, to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program, IB Middle Years Program and IB Diploma Program. The College Board Advanced Placement Program is offered alongside these programs. All instruction is in English and intensive English-as-a-Second-Language programs are provided for non-English speaking students. French is taught as a foreign language in grades 1-12. Elective courses include computers, art, music, physical education and swimming. ASB’s innovative laptop program is in place in the secondary school with all grade 6-12 students using tablet laptop computers. Most of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States and other countries.
Faculty: In the 2006-2007 school year, there are 73 full-time and 2 part-time faculty members.
The School is housed in the Mumbai suburb of Bandra-Kurla. The air-conditioned facilities include 33 classrooms, two libraries, a cafeteria, a gymnasium/multipurpose hall, state-of-the-art science labs, computer labs, a heated swimming pool, playground area for the elementary school students, and sports grounds developed for basketball, tennis, soccer and track and field.
