South Island School is a school founded by English Schools Foundation in Hong Kong, located in Shouson Hill, Aberdeen, in the southern part of the Island. It was founded in 1977 as a nucleus of additional classes to accomodate students within the ages of 11 and 18 from Island School, a fellow ESF School. The school moved to its current location at 50 Nam Fung Road in 1983. The first version of the school consisted of the Ching Ling Soon Block ("C-block"), and an outdoor swimming pool. As the school grew in size, more facilities were required. The next big change to the school came with the construction of the Stephen Hawking Block ("S-block" for short), and swimming pool became an indoor one, allowing all-year round swimming lessons.
Over the past years, South Island School has developed a great stress in use of technology. The school's classrooms were upgraded with the installation of interactive whiteboards, while the renovation of the C-block continued. South Island School has started a 1:1 Laptop Program and by August of 2008 everyone in the school will have a laptop.
The students at South Island School are from many cultural backgrounds and nationalities and this rich diversity is a celebrated feature of the school. The school has a Lower Section (years 7-8), a Middle Section (years 9-11) and a Senior Section (years 12-13). Students at the school are represented by the Student Council.
Extra curricular activities at the school include squash, netball, basketball, debating, swimming, chess, and cricket. Every student is obliged to take part in interhouse athletics and interhouse swimming. As well as inter-house competitions, South Island School competes in various inter-school competitions such as basketball and football. The school also has a demonstration team of two Asian martial arts: Taekwondo and Kendo.
The school has excellent facilities and a modern stimulating environment for learning. All classrooms are fitted out to a high standard with the latest interactive and digital facilities served by high speed broadband and a robust wireless network. Students have their own locker and personal form room. In the senior section there is a dedicated study facility and common room space. Specialist facilities include a 25m Indoor swimming pool, sports hall, gym, artificial astroturf pitch, 3 outdoor courts/play areas, theater/hall, 2 specialist drama studios, 12 science labs, 6 design technology workshops, 3 art rooms, 2 media studies rooms, refectory, library resource center and 5 computer labs.
