Hong Lok Yuen International School is a well established independent school situated in the north New Territories of Hong Kong, The school caters for both expatriates from all over countries and English speaking local Chinese children from 3-12 years to prepare them for International secondary education anywhere in the world. While English is the medium of instruction, the school has a long tradition of teaching Putonghua both as a first and second language. Curriculum is based on the UK National curriculum and particular emphasis is placed on the individual with small classes which enables teachers to know each child and their special needs, and cater for their differences.
The school has an Educational Support Programme to cater for children with special needs and those with English as an Additional Language. HLYIS place high priority on enabling children to be confident, well mannered, socially caring and personally aware. The school motto is "Learning to Live and Learn together". It is run by a Board of Governors elected by members of the Hong Lok Yuen International School Association who are parents of the students. An extensive extra-curricular programme of sporting and other after school activities is provided at school to enrich and broaden children's learning.
HLYIS is approved by the Education Department and has to comply with certain guidelines regarding general school management. Hong Lok Yuen International School is very much an independent school but has established links with other schools through HK International Schools Administrators Group (ISAA), HKSSEN (Hong Kong School Self Evaluation network), membership of some ESF (English Schools Foundation) curriculum groups and with CIS (Council of International Schools) by whom it is accredited.
