The French International School of Hong Kong, which was given the name of "Victor Segalen" in 1994, is a private school governed locally, created and managed by the Parents’ Association (French International School Association Limited) and linked by convention to the Agency for French Teaching Abroad, a national administrative body. The school is placed directly under the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Cooperation Ministry. Founded as a "small French school" in 1964 for a handful of children, it enrolled its 1000th pupil in January 1994 and today has almost 1400 students. The school has a strong academic emphasis with students taught by highly qualified expatriate staff. Pupils of the French and International streams are encouraged to communicate and socialize and are taught together for PE. Languages are particularly encouraged with Mandarin and French being taught from Primary. In the secondary level, Latin or Mandarin is taught in Form 1 while Spanish is taught from Form 3. In form 4, students choose nine or ten subjects to study to IGCSE level; English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and French are compulsory and a further choice is made from 11 other subjects. In the International Stream, Forms 6 and 7 follow International Baccalaureate Diploma level courses as approved by the International Baccalaureate Organization. The primary school, built in 1984, is located in Jardine's Lookout, a quiet residential area overlooking Hong Kong. It benefits from modern facilities including a swimming pool, library, canteen, gymnasium, auditorium, and specialist science, computer and language laboratories. A new secondary school, for the French International School, located 500m from the primary school at Blue Pool Road was completed in January 1999 on a parcel of land given by the Hong Kong Government on condition that the school opened an English Section (also known as the International Section.) Entrance to the International stream is by examination (Maths and English), interview and previous academic reports.
