Beijing No. 55 High School is a state-funded school and one of the municipal government's key centers. The school was founded in 1954 and was once the only middle school in Beijing that accepted foreign students. Today, Beijing No. 55 has a Chinese Students Department as well as an International Students Department which was established way back in 1975 to help bring education to more than 2,000 children of expatriates. It is the first Chinese school to become a member of the prestigious International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) and became an IB World School in October 1995 authorized to offer the IB Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) and IB Diploma Programme (IBDP). Instructions for the IBMYP is given in Chinese while the curriculum for the IBDP is taught in English. The school campus sits on a 20,000 square meter campus with well-equipped modern teaching facilities, including boarding facilities for male and female students. It has three classroom buildings, a two-story gym and an auditorium which can accommodate 1,000 people. The school has two computer labs, two multi-function classrooms, nince science labs, and special classrooms for music, fine arts and vocational training. The school also employs 200 staff members and qualified teachers.
