The International School of Tanganyika, Ltd. (IST), established in 1963, is a private, coeducational day school, which offers a full educational program for pupils from the age of 3 to pre-university. A child must be 3 years of age before September 1st to be admitted to the PK program. The school year begins in mid-August and the first semester ends in December. The second semester starts in January and ends by mid-June. IST maintains a reputation as one of the leading international educational institutions on the African continent. The School is governed by a Board of Directors, elected for 3-year terms of office by parents of pupils of the School, all of whom are eligible to vote and to hold office. The Director reports to the Board. There is one principal and vice principal for each of the campuses: elementary and secondary. IST is an IB World School. The elementary school is composed of the Early Childhood Center (ECC 1-3) and the Elementary School (grades 1-5). Grades EC1-5 follow the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program. The Secondary School consists of grades 6-12. The Middle School follows the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program. Students in their last two years of high school take the IB diploma program, a college preparation course of study. The school is a center for PSAT, SAT and TOEFL testing. IST provides ESL services to students through grade 10. Learning services are also available to qualified students but assistance is limited and does not extend beyond grade 10. IST is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the International Baccalaureate Organization. The School is situated on two campuses. The Elementary School campus consists of 35 classrooms, 2 science labs, 2 computer rooms, a music room, an art room, an auditorium, a drama room, a library, an audio visual room, a swimming pool and an athletic field. The Secondary School campus, located a few miles away, consists of 31 classrooms, seven science laboratories, a library, an art room, 3 computer rooms, an audio visual theatre, a multipurpose hall/gymnasium, a music and drama centre, swimming and diving pools, and a sports field.
