The American International School of Mozambique, founded in 1990, is an independent, coeducational day school offering an American-style educational program in English from PK through grade 12. The school year begins in mid-August and ends in mid-June.
The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Directors, 6 of whom are elected by the AISM Association and one appointed by the U.S. Ambassador.
The School offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP). The PYP for students in PK-grade 5, focuses on the development of the whole child, addressing social, emotional, physical, cultural and intellectual needs organized around six themes. The MYP for students in grades 6-8, is organized around a set of perspectives that provide an interconnected framework for learning in all major disciplines. The Diploma Program for students in grades 11-12, offers a broad and balanced curriculum with emphasis on critical thinking as well as intercultural understanding and respect for others. The School has been awarded candidacy status for the IB Primary Years Program PYP) and Middle Years Program (MYP) and is authorized to offer the Diploma Program of the International Baccalaureate Organization.. AISM is accredited by the Middle States Association of College and Schools.
The primary and secondary buildings house administration, learning support services, music, art, technology, libraries, and a total of 28 classrooms. The elementary school library is fully automated and contains more than 10,000 volumes. The secondary library is designed specifically to support scholarly research required by the IBO Diploma Program. AISM maintains two technology centers with 50 networked computers and permanent Internet access. Sports and recreational facilities include a 25-meter outdoor swimming pool, a covered sports court, playgrounds, and soccer field. A cafeteria provides daily lunch and snacks.
