
The International School of Kenya is a private, coeducational day school which offers an educational program from prekindergarten through grade 13 as well as the International Baccalaureate program for students of all nationalities. The School was jointly purchased by the U.S. and Canadian governments in 1976. The school year consists of 2 semesters extending from August to December and from January to June.
The School is governed by a 7-member Board of Governors and a 9-member Board of Directors. Three members of the Board of Directors are appointed and 6 members are elected by parents of children enrolled in the school. All 7 members of the Board of Governors are appointed. Four members represent the U.S. Embassy and 3 members represent the Canadian High Commission.
The curriculum is basically North American and meets the requirements for entry into U.S. colleges and universities. The program is supplemented by the International Baccalaureate, which includes a full program of advanced courses. The school testing program includes the College Board tests (PSAT and SAT) and Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills. Instruction is in English. French, Spanish, and Swahili are offered as foreign languages. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and the European Council of International Schools..
The School is located in a rural area on 49 acres of property approximately 8 miles from Nairobi's city center. Considerable construction and renovation has taken place since 1976. Facilities now include an art and technology complex, a 500-seat theatre, a Kdg.-grade 13 media center with video and research centers, a gym, 3 computer laboratories, science laboratories, a student center, a kindergarten complex, a solar-heated swimming pool, 3 tennis courts, extensive playing fields classrooms and a multi-sports court.
